Search the Halifax County Sex Offender Registry

The Virginia State Police runs the official Sex Offender and Crimes Against Minors Registry for all 95 Virginia counties, including Halifax. The primary search portal is at sex-offender.vsp.virginia.gov/sor. An alternate portal is available at vspsor.com. Both draw from the same statewide database. No fee. No login required.

To find offenders in Halifax County, enter a zip code such as 24558 for the Halifax area or nearby zip codes for South Boston and other parts of the county. You can search by name if you know who you are looking for. You can also enter a street address and set a radius in miles to see all registered offenders nearby. Each result shows the person's current home address, a photo taken at registration, date of birth, and the offense that put them on the registry. The database updates each business day as new registrations and address changes are processed by the State Police.

Halifax County has approximately 60 to 80 registered sex offenders. If you have a question about a specific listing or need to report a possible compliance issue, contact the VSP Sex Offender Registry unit at (804) 674-2825 or email sor.vsp@vsp.virginia.gov.

Halifax County Sheriff's Office

The Halifax County Sheriff's Office is located at 55 Stage Road, Halifax, VA 24558. The main phone number is (434) 476-3334, with a fax at (434) 476-6538. You can reach the office by email at sheriff@halifaxcountyva.gov. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Dispatchers are available 24 hours a day for emergencies. Sheriff Matt Hodges leads the office. The department's website is at halifaxcountyva.gov/sheriff.

The Sheriff's Office processes all sex offender registrations for Halifax County. New offenders who move into the county must come in person to complete their initial registration. Offenders who are already registered and change their address must report that change within three days. The Criminal Investigations Division handles compliance monitoring, including field checks to verify that registered addresses are current and correct. Any offender found to be out of compliance is referred for prosecution.

The Patrol Division also plays a role. Deputies who encounter a registered offender in the field can check the person's registration status in real time. If someone's listed address does not match where they appear to be living, that is grounds for a compliance investigation.

The VSP State Police maintain the registry itself, but Halifax County's Sheriff's Office is the local point of contact for registration. Court security and prisoner transport are handled by the same office, meaning offenders sentenced in Halifax Circuit Court will be processed for registration before or right after release.

Virginia Sex Offender Registration Requirements

Virginia's sex offender registration law is in Virginia Code Title 9.1, Chapter 9. The law sets three tiers. Tier I offenders register once a year for 15 years. Tier II offenders register once a year for 25 years. Tier III offenders register every 90 days for life. The tier is set by the type of offense at sentencing, not by behavior after conviction.

A person convicted of a qualifying offense must register within three days of release from incarceration or, if not incarcerated, within three days of sentencing. Every address change must be reported within three days as well. If an offender gets a new email address or internet username, that change must be reported within 30 minutes. These timelines come directly from the statute at law.justia.com/codes/virginia/title-9-1/chapter-9.

Failure to register is a Class 1 misdemeanor for Tier I and Tier II offenders. For Tier III offenders, failing to register is a Class 6 felony. Tier III offenders also face location restrictions and may not live, work, or loiter within 500 feet of a school or daycare center in Virginia.

Note: Tier classification is set at sentencing and stays with the offender for the full registration period, regardless of where in Virginia they live or move.

What the Registry Shows for Halifax Offenders

Each listing in the Virginia Sex Offender Registry includes the person's full legal name, current home address, date of birth, a photo taken at the time of registration, and the conviction that required registration. The record also shows the tier level and when the next check-in is scheduled. Some offenders list both a home address and a work address if employed at a separate location.

Transient offenders, those without a fixed address, show a general area or last known location rather than a street address. If an address looks outdated, it may mean the offender failed to file a required update. That is a compliance violation. Report it to the VSP registry unit at (804) 674-2825. The State Police treat non-compliance seriously, and the Halifax County Sheriff's Office conducts regular field checks to verify listed addresses are accurate.

The National Sex Offender Public Website (NSOPW) lets you search across all 50 states at once. This is useful if someone may have moved to Halifax County from another state, or if you need to check a prior address outside Virginia.

The Virginia State Police also maintain a supplemental registry covering convictions from before 1994, when the current law took effect. Not all pre-1994 offenders appear in the main database, so that secondary source is worth checking for older cases. It is accessible through the same VSP portal.

Halifax County Circuit Court Records

The Halifax County Circuit Court handles all felony sex offense cases in the county. Sentencing orders from that court set the registration requirement and tier level for each convicted offender. Court records are open to the public during business hours. Copies cost $0.50 per page. Certified copies cost $2.00. The Clerk's Office also maintains protective orders issued by the court.

If you want to find out whether a person was convicted of a sex offense in Halifax County, you can search case records through the Virginia Courts case information system at vacourts.gov. That site covers circuit and general district court records statewide. Not every detail is online, but case numbers, charges, and dispositions are often available.

Petitions to be removed from the sex offender registry after the required registration period are also filed in Halifax County Circuit Court. The court reviews the petition and may or may not grant removal depending on the tier and the offender's history. The Halifax County Commonwealth's Attorney's Office has notice of all such petitions.

The Virginia State Police forms used in Halifax County include SP-167 for background checks, SP-230 for registration, and SP-266 for sex offender registry searches. The Halifax County Sheriff's Office can direct you to the correct form for your specific need.
