The Sheriff's Office manages sex offender registration for Henry County. New offenders moving into the county must report in person to complete initial registration. Existing registrants who change their address must do so within three days. The Criminal Investigations Division handles compliance monitoring, including field checks to confirm that listed addresses are accurate and current. Address verification is conducted regularly for all tiers.
The Patrol Division also plays a role in compliance. Deputies who encounter a registered offender during patrols can verify the person's registration status on the spot. The Henry County Sheriff coordinates with the Martinsville Police Department on cases that cross between county and city jurisdiction. Offenders who live in Henry County but work in Martinsville, or vice versa, are subject to registration at both locations if required by their tier and offense type.
The Sheriff's Office Patrol Division covers the full county area, including communities like Collinsville, Bassett, Axton, and Ridgeway. Each area uses the same VSP registry system. Registration does not vary by community within the county.
Virginia Sex Offender Registration Requirements
Virginia's sex offender registration law is at Virginia Code Title 9.1, Chapter 9. Three tiers exist based on the type of offense. Tier I offenders register once a year for 15 years. Tier II offenders register once a year for 25 years. Tier III offenders register every 90 days for life.
Registration is due within three days of release from custody or, if no incarceration was ordered, within three days of sentencing. Every address change must be reported within three days. A new email address or online username must be reported within 30 minutes of being created or obtained. The complete list of qualifying offenses and all registration requirements are in the statute at law.justia.com/codes/virginia/title-9-1/chapter-9.
Failure to register is a Class 1 misdemeanor for Tier I and Tier II offenders. For Tier III, it rises to a Class 6 felony. Tier III offenders also cannot live, work, or loiter within 500 feet of a school or daycare in Virginia.
Note: Tier classification is fixed at sentencing and does not change if the offender moves to a different Virginia county. Henry County's Sheriff's Office enforces the same standards as every other county in the state.
What Each Registry Entry Shows
Each entry in the Virginia Sex Offender Registry lists the person's full legal name, current home address, date of birth, a photo taken at registration, and the offense that triggered the registration requirement. The entry also shows the tier level and when the next check-in is due. If the offender works somewhere other than home, that work address may also appear.
Offenders without a fixed address, called transient offenders, show a general area or last known location. If an address seems outdated or incorrect, the person may have failed to file a required update. That is a compliance violation. Report it to the VSP at (804) 674-2825. The Henry County Sheriff's Office conducts regular field checks to verify addresses.
The National Sex Offender Public Website (NSOPW) lets you search across all 50 states at once. If someone recently moved to Henry County from another state, NSOPW can help you check whether they had a prior registration elsewhere. Search is free and no account is required.

Court records are open to the public during business hours. Copies cost $0.50 per page. Certified copies cost $2.00. The Clerk's Office maintains protective orders issued by the court. Juvenile sex offense records are sealed and not available to the public.
