Virginia Sex Offender Registration Law

Virginia's registration requirements are in Virginia Code Title 9.1, Chapter 9. Virginia uses three tiers to classify offenders. Tier I requires annual check-ins for 15 years. Tier II requires annual check-ins for 25 years. Tier III requires quarterly check-ins for life. The tier depends on the offense type and is set at sentencing. It does not change based on behavior after conviction.

All offenders must register within three days of release from incarceration, or within three days of sentencing if no jail time was served. Address changes must be reported within three days of moving. Changes to online identifiers like email addresses or usernames must be reported within 30 minutes. Failure to register on time is a Class 1 misdemeanor for Tier I and II. For Tier III, it is a Class 6 felony. Full statute text is also at law.justia.com/codes/virginia/title-9-1/chapter-9.

Note: Tier III offenders may not live, work, or loiter within 500 feet of any school, daycare center, or facility that mainly serves children.

What Registry Listings Show

Every listing in the Washington County portion of the registry shows the offender's full legal name, current home address, date of birth, photo from the most recent check-in, the qualifying offense, and the tier level. Work or school addresses are also listed if they differ from the home address. The entry shows when the next check-in deadline falls.

Transient offenders without a fixed home are listed with a general area or last known location. They still must report on their regular schedule. If a listing looks outdated or the address appears incorrect, report it to the VSP at (804) 674-2825 or through vspsor.com. The Washington County Sheriff's Office handles all local follow-up.

If the offender's photo is on file, it shows on the left side of the result. The conviction offense is listed, along with the date of conviction and the locality where the case was heard.
