Virginia Registration Requirements
Virginia's sex offender registration law is in Virginia Code Title 9.1, Chapter 9. The law divides offenders into three tiers by offense type. Tier I requires annual check-ins for 15 years. Tier II requires annual check-ins for 25 years. Tier III requires quarterly check-ins for life. The tier is assigned at sentencing and stays the same regardless of where the person lives or how they behave after conviction.
New registrants must report within three days of release from incarceration, or within three days of sentencing if no jail time was served. Address changes must be reported within three days. Changes to internet identifiers, like a new email or username, must be reported within 30 minutes. For Tier I and II offenders, missing a deadline is a Class 1 misdemeanor. For Tier III it is a Class 6 felony. The full statute text is also available at law.justia.com/codes/virginia/title-9-1/chapter-9.
Note: Tier III offenders may not live, work, or loiter within 500 feet of any school, daycare center, or similar facility serving children.
What Registry Entries Include
Each listing in the Warren County portion of the registry shows the offender's legal name, current home address, date of birth, photo, tier level, and the qualifying offense. If the person works or goes to school at a location other than their home, those addresses are also included. The listing shows when the next check-in is due.
Transient offenders who lack a fixed address are listed with a general location or last known area. They must still report on schedule. If a listing seems outdated or the address appears incorrect, that could mean the person has not filed a required update. You can report it to the VSP at (804) 674-2825 or through vspsor.com.
The VSP registry at vspsor.com is the primary public tool for searching registered sex offenders in Warren County.
