Virginia's sex offender registration law is in Virginia Code Title 9.1, Chapter 9. Three tiers exist based on offense type. Tier I offenders register once a year for 15 years. Tier II offenders register once a year for 25 years. Tier III offenders register every 90 days for life. The tier is fixed at sentencing.

Registration is due within three days of release from custody or, if no incarceration was ordered, within three days of sentencing. Address changes must be reported within three days. New email addresses or online usernames must be reported within 30 minutes. Virginia State Police Form SP-236 is the registration form required for initial registration in King William County. It must be completed in person and requires fingerprints and a photograph. The full statutory text is at law.justia.com/codes/virginia/title-9-1/chapter-9.

Failing to register is a Class 1 misdemeanor for Tier I and Tier II offenders. For Tier III, it is a Class 6 felony. Tier III offenders also may not live, work, or loiter within 500 feet of any school or daycare center in Virginia.

Note: The registration requirement and tier do not change when an offender moves to King William County. The rules that applied in the prior county continue to apply here.

What the Registry Shows for King William County Offenders

Every entry in the Virginia Sex Offender Registry lists the person's full legal name, current home address, date of birth, a photo from the most recent registration, and the offense that required registration. The tier level and next check-in date are shown. Work addresses may appear when an offender is employed away from home.

Transient offenders show a general area or last known location rather than a fixed address. If an address looks wrong or outdated, the offender may have failed to report an address change. That is a violation. Report it to the VSP at (804) 674-2825. The King William County Sheriff's Office runs regular compliance checks to verify listed addresses.

The National Sex Offender Public Website (NSOPW) allows searches across all 50 states. If someone recently moved to King William County from another state, NSOPW can confirm whether they had a prior registration. The search is free.
