Virginia Sex Offender Registration Requirements

Virginia's sex offender registration law is in Virginia Code Title 9.1, Chapter 9. Three tiers apply based on the offense. Tier I offenders register annually for 15 years. Tier II offenders register annually for 25 years. Tier III offenders register every 90 days for life. The tier is set at sentencing.

Registration is due within three days of release from custody or, if no incarceration was ordered, within three days of sentencing. Every address change must be reported within three days. New email addresses or online usernames must be reported within 30 minutes. The full statutory text is at law.justia.com/codes/virginia/title-9-1/chapter-9. Virginia State Police forms used in King George County include SP-167, SP-230, and SP-266.

Failing to register is a Class 1 misdemeanor for Tier I and Tier II offenders. For Tier III, it is a Class 6 felony. Tier III offenders also may not live, work, or loiter within 500 feet of any school or daycare in Virginia.

Note: Tier classification is fixed at sentencing and does not change based on where the offender lives, moves, or works. Moving to King George County from another Virginia county does not reset the registration clock.

What the Registry Shows for King George County Offenders

Each entry in the Virginia Sex Offender Registry shows the person's full legal name, current home address, date of birth, a photo taken at the most recent registration, and the offense behind the registration requirement. The tier level and next check-in date are also listed. If the offender works at a location different from home, a work address may also appear.

Transient offenders show a general area or last known location rather than a street address. If an address looks outdated, the person may have failed to report an address change. That is a compliance violation. Report it to the VSP at (804) 674-2825. The King George County Sheriff's Office conducts regular field checks to verify addresses are accurate.

The National Sex Offender Public Website (NSOPW) covers all 50 states. King George County's location in northern Virginia between Fredericksburg and Dahlgren means some residents may have moved from nearby Maryland or the DC area, so a multi-state check through NSOPW can be helpful.
